If your compassion does not include yourself...

The Buddha knew that it is often easier to be kind to others than it is to be kind to ourselves. This timeless pearl of wisdom is his attempt to remind us to be kind to ourselves. He knew the importance of this because he knew the healing power of forgiving, accepting, and loving oneself. He also knew that without this it is impossible to genuinely and effectively extend the same to others.
By forgiving, accepting, and loving everyone, including yourself, you clear the negative emotional energy associated with judgment and resentment. With this energy gone the disharmony and adversity which it manifests will disappear, bringing increased harmony and happiness into your life.
